Transportation
Getting around Kauai is easy, if you have a car. There are definitely strides being taking to making Kauai more accessible for the car-less, but it is not quite there yet. The Kauai Bus does service many of the main arteries on Kauai, which is a good portion of the island, but it does not have enough stops to make it feasible for a vacationer to strictly go by bus. True, many hotels will run shuttles to get you to their facilities, but once you want to venture out, there may be no nearby bus stops, and taxis are not easy to come by. For locals, the bus can be a good alternative, but due to infrequent scheduled buses, and running times that do not extend into the evenings, it is near impossible to rely solely on public transportation. Riding bikes on Kauai’s narrow roads can also be a harrowing experience. There are several bike paths in development, and a good portion of the East Side is now accessible by bike, but not enough of the island is bike friendly to make biking much more than a leisure activity. Also due to the weather biking on Kauai can be downright nasty and dangerous. Most Kauaians use motor vehicles to get around as do a large proportion of visitors to the island.
